Common Dog Diseases

Dog Diseases: Like any domestic animal, dogs too are very susceptible to many diseases.  A well balanced diet and exercise can keep the dog healthy, but cannot make them completely immune to diseases.  Dogs are prone to many kinds of diseases and may also carry strains of disorders inherited from its forefathers which might be seen as they grow.  Detection for dog diseases can help them to stay in good health.  The common dog diseases are listed below:

Diarrhea can be seen in pups compared to adult dogs as it may be caused due to stress, or change in the food they intake, or due to virus or bacterial infections.  Diarrhea should be taken seriously as it may be fatal due to the dehydration caused. 

Upper respiratory infections in the dogs lead to discharge from nose or eyes, can cause sneezing and even cough.  This dog disease is due to the viruses and bacteria which are air borne.  It can even develop in to pneumonia.  Bortadella also known as kennel cough is a respiratory dog disease. 

Rabies is a dog disease caused by virus affecting the central nervous system in the dog.  It spreads through saliva and there is no cure to this deadly disease.

Distemper is also considered as a deadly dog disease which results in nasal discharge, weight loss, coughing, diarrhea, congestion in the chest etc.  It can even cause paralysis in the dog as this too affects the central nervous system of the dog.  Once infected by this disease, there is no cure to it.

Bloat is a dog disease caused by the twisting of the stomach.  It is due to over eating, where the dog feels depressed and restless.  Treatment should be given immediately.

Parvovirus is a fast killing disease in the dogs as it can kill the dog within two to three days time.  This disease attacks the intestinal tract of the dog.  It can also affect the heart of the dog.  It results in severe diarrhea, vomiting, appetite loss etc.

Canine viral hepatitis is a dog disease affecting the liver, kidney and the blood vessels of the dog.  This results in intense thirst, vomiting, hemorrhages and loss in appetite.  This is contagious.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial dog disease.  This also affects the kidneys causing inflammation, fever which is very mild and can even lead to blood clotting sometimes.  In chronic conditions can lead to pneumonia, jaundice and inflammation of the intestines.

Retinal dysplasia is due to the abnormal development of the retina.  In minor conditions might lead to minor vision problems, if it of an acute one, might even lead to blindness in dogs.  Cataract is accompanied with it.
